Water leak from vagina During Intercourse in Pregnancy

You may be really tensed right now and thatswhy you came here searching for what happened to you, that never happened before. You are very eager to know if your baby is safe inside or if there is some complication due to this incident that just happened to you. And that is a sudden water leak from your vagina during intercourse.

First of all, let me tell you that there is no need to worry about this. I know it's not easy to say because I also experienced the same incident and was frightened till I visited my doctor the next day. Having sex during pregnancy is entirely normal. Many women think they should avoid intercourse as they believe it might hurt their baby. But remember that your baby is deep inside your uterus completely protected and surrounded around with layers of muscles. Having hard sex also cannot hurt your baby or you. Many pregnant women can also use sex toys. This can be done only if you have a healthy pregnancy. Your doctor will tell you if it's safe for you to have sex or use sex toys depending on your pregnancy reports.

Now let me come to your point. You may have never seen your bed wet during intercourse with water-like liquid from your vagina. Nearly half a glass of water may come out and wet your bed when you were having intercourse. This liquid may look clear and watery. You can feel it coming out of your vagina. Naturally, when we have sex, a small amount of white discharge comes out of our vagina just like sperms come out from men's penis. This is normal.

There are a few reasons for water-like liquid coming out of your vagina during sex according to my experience:-

1. If you are having sex after a long period of time like after 20 days, after 2 weeks, after many months, or after a few years, then it becomes hard for you as your vaginal opening is closed for so many days. When you have intercourse at this time with force or normally, it can break the vaginal layer that covers your vagina when you are not having sex and due to its breakage, some liquid might come out. This can happen to any woman who is pregnant or not pregnant. It is not related to pregnancy.

2. It can also be a small amount of urine passed by you during sex as you can't hold it for longer while having sex. But you will know that urine is in dark yellow or white color with the smell.

3. It can be urine from your partner's penis too. As many people cannot control urine, a small amount of it may come out during sex. They might think it was the sperms with liquid that came out.

4. Water break can also happen during sex when you are in the last month of your pregnancy or near your delivery date. This is the amniotic fluid that comes out from the vagina with force or continuous leak. This looks clear like water without any smell.

5. In some women, Water break or rupture of the amniotic fluid sac can also happen in the second trimester or the first trimester. This is called the rupture of the amniotic fluid sac. Some women may get a small hole in the sac by which there will be a continuous leak of the amniotic fluid in small amounts. When this happens you will be admitted to the hospital. Because the amniotic fluid is very essential for your baby's growth. Without it,, your baby might easily catch infections, which can be dangerous for you and your baby.

If you are not sure about the water that came out during sex then you can quickly check it by yourself, whether it is just a white discharge or the amniotic fluid.  If it was white discharge you will observe that nearly one-third of a small glass of water has come out during sex. It may look very clear like water without any smell. It will stop automatically, once you stop your intercourse. If you still have doubts, wait for some time and check if your pants are getting wet slowly. Remember that women may have white discharge for a few more minutes or when they wake up in the morning after having sex. If you have continuous white discharge for the whole day, then this can be amniotic fluid. If you want to confirm that it is amniotic fluid, then just cough once or twice and check if some water is coming out. If there is no water coming out then it is nothing to worry about.

My Personal Experience

My pregnancy was a little tough this time as this was my second pregnancy along with the low-lying placenta. Many of you might not know what is a low-lying placenta in pregnancy mean. Let me tell you in short. Normally, for every woman the placenta which is the essential part of pregnancy attaches to the upper side, right side, or left side of the uterus to nourish your growing baby. It passes on many essential nutrients, blood, minerals, vitamins, and food from the mother to the baby. It is attached to the uterus and your baby's stomach. After delivery, it will come out automatically once your baby is delivered.

For some women, the placenta will be low-lying in the initial months of pregnancy. It can be detected during the NT scan that you take in your third month of pregnancy. Many doctors say that this is normal and in 90 percent of cases it will come up on its own as the pregnancy progresses or when you reach your third trimester. Only 10 percent of women have a low-lying placenta in their third trimester too. If you have a low-lying placenta, your doctor may advise you to take complete bed rest, avoid heavy lifting, avoid long-distance traveling and avoid intercourse as there are chances of bleeding due to this as your placenta will be very near to your vagina. If you already have bleeding then you will be admitted to the hospital to take extra care.

I was diagnosed with a low-lying placenta during my NT scan. My doctor advised me to take rest, avoid traveling, not do the heavy lifting, and not have intercourse as they may cause bleeding. In some women, the placenta comes close to the vagina and sometimes a little bit out of the vagina. In this case, a small surgery is done in which the vagina is stitched with one or two stitches so that it doesn't come out.

However, even though my doctor told me to avoid all these things, I did all of them. I used to do all the household work along with a 3-year-old school-going kid, I traveled by train, sitting and sleeping for 5 hours continuously to my native town, and I had normal sex every week or once every 2 weeks. I didn't lift anything heavy. I avoided carrying or lifting my 3-year-old son too. I avoided standing or sitting in one place for a long time. Because I didn't have anyone to help me. My parents and in-laws live very far away from me. So I had to do each and every work all by myself. I didn't have any bleeding though I did all these things. I may have some abdominal pain and back pain during work, having sex, or if I didn't take any rest the whole day.

Sex is something that you cannot control for long. In pregnancy, due to hormonal changes, your sex drive reaches high at some times. Thatswhy it's better to stay far away from your partner when you cannot have sex according to me. Because if you are near each other, your sex drive increases whenever you see him. The same happened to me too. We were having sex normally and I didn't have any complications. We did it because I didn't have any bleeding and I was completely normal just like a healthy pregnant woman. But still, we were afraid as there are chances of bleeding after sex in women with low-lying placenta. So we took some gap of 20 days in between. After 20 days, when we had sex again, it became hard for me as my vaginal hole was not opening. With some hard push, it opened slowly and suddenly water came out and my bed got wet. We stopped suddenly and got frightened.

We were afraid because this had never happened to me before. It was midnight and I cannot call any doctor too. So I started searching on the internet but found no answer. I was really disappointed and tense. Thatswhy I made up my mind to write about this, as this content is not available on the internet to people who need to know about this information. The next morning, I messaged 3 gynecologists that were on my WhatsApp. Two of them told me to visit the hospital and another told me it was just normal vaginal discharge and told me to cough and see if there is any water coming out if the amniotic is broken.  I went to the hospital at night and my doctor checked my vagina for any leak and took a scan to check whether the amniotic fluid is normal. By gods grace, everything was normal. But I had a little infection in my vagina by which I had a white discharge. I had to put a capsule in my vagina at night while sleeping for 6 days to treat the infection.
